Sven approached to within a few yards of where the giant bear lay sleeping.  Suddenly, it raised its head, and looked at him...
actual photo, taken seconds before the bear woke up...

That's Two-Headed Island, from Split Rock, near Jap Bay, on the SE end of Kodiak.

The bear was sleeping in between the big split-off piece and the cliff (about 80 feet high) Sven and his hunting partner, Dan, took a break in there; it made a fine windbreak.

The bear awoke as they were leaving; forunately, my brother possessed a bear tag, and a 30.06 Remington . He'd spotted the bear just seconds before it awakened; until it raised its head, he thought perhaps it was a female with cubs. He was able to get a good shot in, as soon as he could tell which end was which.

Since he shot it in the head, it could not be placed in the record book; the skull squared right at thirty inches, which is very large. The hide squared 11.5 feet, after tanning. Fish & Game guy said it might have weighed 2000 pounds; the fat on the hindquarters was 18 inches thick. More pictures coming soon...
